Beitou Hot Spring
The Beitou district in northern Taiwan covers part of the Tatun volcano group which has brought abundant natural water sources to Beitou and created the hot spring.
During the Japanese occupation from 1895 to 1945, Beitou developed into a prosperous hot spring township and the hot spring culture has remained.
Today, there are dozen of bathhouses and resorts in this area, attracting a large number of domestic and foreign tourists from all regions.
Note: Do not go to the hot spring when you are empty stomach, full, drunkness, pregnant, and after intensity exercise. Plus, don’t soak in hot spring too long, and drink water constantly.
Three Types of Hot Springs in the Beitou Area
There are three different types of hot springs in Beitou area: Green Sulfur Springs, White Sulfur Springs and Iron Sulfur Springs.
Green Sulfur Springs
Green sulfur springs are not usual and only can be seen in Akita, Japan, and in Beitou and Yangmingshan, Taiwan.
Although the hot spring is acidic with slightly corrosive, it won’t hurt the human body, instead, it good for the skin, even so, for the people has sensitive skin, do not soak in the hot spring more than 10 minutes.
- Temperature: 50~75℃.
- Color: slight jade green tint.
- pH: acidic sulfate chloride springs, pH1-2.
- Feature: good for skin, relieving muscle soreness, and promoting the metabolism.
White Sulfur Springs
White sulfur hot springs are formed by mountain spring water absorbing volcanic gas and geothermal heat, it milky white color get a nickname “milk bath”, in addition, the white sulfur springs can maintain beautiful and youthful skin, but don’t take too long over than 20 minutes.
- Temperature: 56~90℃.
- Color: milky white.
- PH: acidic sulfate springs, pH4-5.
- Feature: eliminate fatigue, maintain beautiful and youthful skin, treat nerve pain, and relax muscles.
Iron Sulfur Springs
Iron sulfur spring has the magical title of “Golden Spring” and “Immortal Hot Spring” because the spring contains rich iron sediment which is good for skin and body circulation.

- Color: transparent light brown
- PH: neutral carbonate springs, pH4-5.
- Feature: good for skin and circulatory system.
Public Hot Springs
The Beitou public hot springs belong to the government city, so the entry fee is very low or even free. There are five places you can experience outdoor hot spring bathing fun.
Hot Spring Hand-Soaking Pool (手湯)
Next to the Xinbeitou station, here is the first stop to experience green sulfur hot springs and the beginning for exploring Beitou.

Beitou Public Hotspring (北投公園親水公園露天溫泉)
Beitou public hot spring is the best way to experience the green sulfur hot spring without much money, it opened in 1999 on the eve of the new millennium, so it also called “Millennium Hot Spring”.
There are 4 hot spring pools and 2 cold spring pools, just only NT$40 ($1.3) you can totally enjoy all of them.
Men and women share these outdoor pools, so swimwear and swim cap are required.

Fuxing Park Foot Soaking Pool (復興公園泡腳池)
Fuxing Park has three green sulfur hot spring foot soaking pools that are full of nostalgic Japanese soaking baths style, it can accommodate nearly 100 people.
There are three public foot soaking pools in Beitou, Fuxing Park is the most convenient one of them, just only 5 minutes walk from MRT station.

Most Of the hot spring resort In Beitou are white sulfur springs, in addition, each resort has a different type of hot spring bathing pool for choosing:
- Outdoor Hot Spring: it is a public hot spring pool for men and women using together, so swimwear and swim cap are required, moreover, there is a much wide selection of facilities in Beitou resort than Beitou public park.
- Public Hot Spring: You will be naked with strangers in the public hot spring, so it usually separates bathing areas for men and women.

Other Fun Things to Do in Beitou
Xinbeitou Historic Station (新北投車站)
You will see a historic train station next to the MRT Xinbeitou Station, the golden wooden Japanese architecture, with black tiles, is even more dazzling under the sunlight.
The historic Xinbeitou train station was built a century ago until 2017 it was reopened to the public again and restored to its original glory.
Art exhibitions and community activities are held from time to time to make the public to have a deeper understanding of Beitou’s history and culture.

Taipei Public Library Beitou Branch (北投圖書館)
The Beitou Library is a famous eco-green building in Taipei City.
The Japanese-style look was made entirely of wood and steel.
The large floor-to-ceiling windows allow natural light to enter the library thoroughly.

Beitou Hot Spring Museum (北投溫泉博物館)
Beitou hot spring museum is a Victorian-style building with red bricks wall and wooden roof. In 1913, it once was the largest public hot spring bathhouse around East Asia, today it transforms into a cultural exhibition that makes the public understand Beitou hot spring’s history.
You will see the public big bath which is no longer in use on the first floor, also there is a Japanese Tatami lobby on the second floor when you come in, sit in there and watch the green trees outside the window, it’s very comfortable with a gentle breeze.

Plum Garden (梅庭)
Plum Garden was built in the late 1930s, It used to be the summer retreat of a calligrapher Mr. Yu You-ren.
This Japanese wooden architecture is adjacent to the Beitou stream and built in accordance with the terrain.
Today It has been renovated and reopened to the public.

Thermal Valley (地熱谷)
Thermal Valley is one of the sources of green sulfur hot spring in Beitou, it pours out the hot spring water temperature can be as high as 80 to 100 degrees.
It is also called “Hell Valley” or “Ghost Lake” because of the special scene of sulfur mist floating on the surface which looks like hell.

Hidden in the secluded lane, SheMe was once a Barn and today turns into a specialty cafe but still retains the old style of the farmhouse.
