Opened in 1914, the Taipei Zoo (臺北市立動物園), locally called Muzha Zoo (木柵動物園), is the largest zoo in Taiwan, with 165 hectares of land, and now is home to about 377 species and more than 2,783 individual animals.
The Zoo is a great place to spend the day whether you come with family or alone, and there are 8 outdoor exhibits, 6 indoor exhibits, and an education center to get around while you’re there.
After visiting Taipei Zoo, you can take the Maokong Gondola to Maokong for sampling the Taiwanese teas and enjoy the lovely Taipei City view.

How to Get There
Take Brown Line (Wenhu Line) to the terminal station, Taipei Zoo [ BR01 ], Exit No.1 and you will see the zoo entrance.

When to Visit Taipei Zoo?
Although the Taipei Zoo opens every day, I think the best time to go is during a non-holiday weekday, because the number of tickets for Giant Panda House is limited on the weekend, and there are fewer people on a weekday. Also, you can go early in the morning or afternoon when the animals are most active, especially avoid visiting at noon during the summer.
How to Get Around Taipei Zoo?
There are two ways to get around the Taipei Zoo:
Option 1: Shuttle Train Up & Walking Down
Heading to Koala House first, then take the zoo shuttle train up to the top and then walking your way down toward the exit.

Option 2: Walking Up & Shuttle Bus to Maokong Gondola
If you are going to Maokong after visiting Taipei Zoo, you can walk up to the top, and then take the shuttle bus at Bird World Station directly to the Maokong Gondola Taipei Zoo South Station.

Animals and Zones
The Taipei Zoo is divided into 8 Areas, 6 Houses, and 1 Education Center, in addition to viewing the Taiwanese animals, you can see a variety of animals from African, Australia, the tropical rainforest, the desert, and the temperate zones.
Areas (Outdoor Exhibits)
Formosan Animal Area(臺灣動物區)
Located on the right to the entrance, this area display Taiwan’s native wildlife, including Formosan Sika Deer, Formosan Wild Boar, Clouded Leopard, Black Bear, European Otter, Formosan Serow, Formosan Rock Macaque, and Formosan Pangolin.
Children’s Zoo(兒童動物區)
Located on the right to the exit, here is a paradise for children to see and feed a variety of cute animals, including Pony, Donkey, Raccoon, Alpaca, Lemur, Meerkat, etc.
Tropical Rainforest Area(熱愛雨林區)
The area simulates Southeast Asia’s tropical rainforest scenery and you can view diversity animals including Siamang, Orangutan, Malayan Tapir, Asian Elephant, Bengal Tiger, Giant Anteater,etc.
Desert Animal Area(沙漠動物區)
When you see the camels, the most iconic desert animals, means you come to the Desert Animal Area, this area simulates the desert environment, besides the Bactrian Camel, there are African Wild Ass and Addax.
Australia Animal Area(澳洲動物區)
Close to Desert Animal Area, this area is home to Australia animals including Eastern Grey Kangaroo, Southern Cassowary, and Koala.
Africa Animal Area(非洲動物區)
The African continent is known as the Animal Kingdom because there are teeming with different kind of animals. You can see those African animals in this exhibit, including Giraffe, White Rhinoceros, Lion, Zebra, Hippopotamus, Lemur, Spotted Hyaena, Western Gorilla, African Elephant, etc.
Temperate Zone Animal Area(溫帶動物區)
The area displays animals that inhabit temperate grasslands and forests, including Asian Black Bear, Tomistoma, Red Panda, Mountain Lion, etc.
Bird World(鳥園)
The Bird World covers an area of about four hectares, with about 135 species and 1,200 birds. If you are a birdwatching lover, definitely don’t miss it.
Houses (Indoor Exhibits)
Koala House(無尾熊館)
The koalas in this house come from the Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary in the Gold Coast of Australia. It represents the friendship between the two cities.
Giant Panda House(貓熊館)
It is home to the pandas from China. In addition to being able to see these cute and playful animals, you will learn the survival crisis that pandas faced and how hard efforts everyone should do for reserving them.
*If you plan to Giant Panda House on the weekend or holiday should get the limited panda-visiting ticket at the zoo entrance.
Aye-aye Pangolin Dome(穿山甲館)
Opened on July 9, 2019, the exterior design inspired by the Taiwan Pangolin, inside the 24 meters high dome simulates the Amazon river environment in South America, showing the tropical rainforest flora and diverse fauna. Also, you can see many endangered species, including Linnaeus’s Two-toed Sloth, Cotton-top Tamarin, Cichlid, and Red-and-blue Lory.
Penguin House(企鵝館)
There are two types of penguins in this house: King Penguins and Jackass Penguin.
Amphibian&Reptile House(兩棲爬蟲館)
The house display more than 90 species of amphibians and reptiles, leads visitors into this mysterious world and to understand the importance and existence value of amphibians and reptiles.
Insectarium(昆蟲館)
Insectarium is a two-story building, in here you will learn anything about insects such as the origin, evolution, and insect structure. Especially there is an outdoor greenhouse where you will be surrounded by different butterfly species.
Behind the Insectarium is Insect valley(蟲蟲探索谷) where uses the natural environment to attract insects, which is the best place for an ecological tour and outdoor natural experience.
Education Center
Education Center, also called “Animal Ecology and Dinosaur Museum,” is a static exhibit for education and conservation, which is made of a zoo library, auditorium, children hands-on museum, and six theme exhibits that feature Asian Animals, Prehistoric Animals, Natural Ecology Conservation, Lin Wang / Asian Elephant Exhibition, and Taipei Zoo History.
